New Global Herbalism Perspectives for Winter Immunity
Staying Well Through the Cold Season: What the World’s Herbal Traditions Know About Immunity
Dec 14, 2026
5PM, Pacific, 8PM, Eastern
Every winter the same pattern repeats. The days shorten, people move indoors, and the colds, flu, and lingering coughs begin their rounds through households, workplaces, and schools. Some people seem to catch everything that goes around and take weeks to recover. Others sail through the season with barely a sniffle. The difference is not luck, and it is not simply a matter of taking the right pill in October. Immunity is a whole-body process shaped by sleep, food, light, stress, movement, the company you keep, and the traditions of care that cultures around the world developed over centuries of cold winters.
The good news is that winter immunity responds to informed care. Understanding what your immune system actually does when it meets a virus, knowing which everyday habits strengthen it and which quietly undermine it, learning what the world’s herbal traditions have used for generations to prevent and shorten winter illness, and knowing when a symptom needs a professional can change the cold season from something that happens to you into something you prepare for and manage with confidence.
This friendly course was created for everyday people who want clear, honest answers about staying well in winter. No medical background is required, just a curiosity about your own body and a desire to get through the season healthy and strong. Come as you are, and bring your questions; nothing is too basic to ask here.
This course is ideal for anyone who gets sick every winter, anyone caring for children or older relatives through cold and flu season, and anyone who is tired of conflicting advice about supplements and wants to know what actually works.

Staying Well Through the Cold Season: What the World’s Herbal Traditions Know About Immunity
Dec 14, 2026
5PM, Pacific, 8PM, Eastern
This welcoming, easy-to-understand course is designed for everyday people who want to take better care of their immune health, understand why winter brings so much illness, and make more informed decisions about prevention and recovery. The course translates complex medical information into plain, practical language that makes sense immediately, and it approaches a subject that is crowded with hype and marketing with clarity, balance and candor.
We begin with the foundations: how the immune system works, in plain language, what the difference is between the fast first-line defenses and the slower learned ones, why winter viruses spread more easily in cold months, and what a fever, a runny nose, and a cough are actually for. From there we explore the concerns people ask about most. We look at why some people seem to catch everything, and what sleep, vitamin D, stress, and indoor air have to do with it. We address the common cold and influenza, what shortens them and what does not, and how to tell an ordinary winter illness from one that needs medical attention. We talk about the cough and fatigue that linger after the infection has passed. And we take on the supplement question directly: which of the popular winter remedies have scientific evidence behind them, which are traditional and which are simply marketing.
Along the way we introduce some genuinely new ideas. Research on the gut microbiome has changed how we understand immunity, and the foods and ferments that traditional winter diets relied on turn out to matter more than anyone expected. The
seasonal drop in vitamin D at northern latitudes is now understood to be a real driver of winter illness, with clear guidance emerging on who benefits from supplementing. The old herbal categories of tonics taken through the season and remedies taken at the first sign of illness are being tested with modern tools, and the results are more interesting than either the enthusiasts or the skeptics expected.
This course uses the Global Herbalism approach. Rather than treating any one tradition as the whole answer, Global Herbalism draws on the best of the world’s great healing systems, the Western herbal and scientific tradition, Ayurveda, and Traditional Chinese Medicine, and places them alongside conventional medical understanding. You will learn how each tradition approaches winter: the Western herbalist’s classic remedies; Ayurveda’s seasonal regimen for the cold months, with its warming spices, its emphasis on digestion, and herbs; and Traditional Chinese Medicine’s long tradition of building the body’s protective qi through the season with herbs and its careful distinction between what to take before illness and what to take once it has begun. You will see where the traditions agree, what each does particularly well, and how to think about herbs and natural approaches, including what the evidence supports and where caution is wise. Clear visual illustrations bring each concept to life in a way that is immediately relatable and easy to remember.
This course is taught with deep respect for the questions that everyday people bring to their healthcare. The instructor, K.P. Khalsa, brings over 5 decades of hands-on clinical experience in herbal and integrative medicine together with recognized expertise across Western herbalism, Ayurveda, and Traditional Chinese Medicine, the very traditions at the heart of the Global Herbalism approach.
Khalsa is a professor at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and teaches at two natural medicine universities. He holds credentials as an Ayurvedic Doctor, a state licensed dietitian/nutritionist, a nationally registered herbalist and holds the title of Yogiraj in Ayurveda.
As a widely respected educator and author in the field, he is committed to honest, trustworthy health education that is rooted in both current medical evidence and real clinical experience, and that is careful to distinguish the scientific from the traditional. The aim is simple: accurate, balanced information, delivered without hype or fear, that genuinely empowers you to make good decisions and to know when to involve a qualified professional.
