You may not know exactly what indigestion is, but you sure know it when you have it. The term indigestion, or upset stomach, refers to any number of gastrointestinal symptoms. Dyspepsia, the medical term for indigestion, is a catchall term that includes an assortment of digestive problems such as appetite loss, belching, stomach discomfort, gas, bloating and nausea.
The hot type of indigestion, gastritis, or heartburn, involves inflammation or irritation of the inner lining (mucosa) of the stomach. Gastritis can be caused by many factors and, in some cases, may precede ulcer. Heartburn is a burning sensation caused by stomach acid regurgitating into the esophagus. These people often suffer from diarrhea. Remedies include cooling, soothing herbs.
Gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, is a more serious condition. Essentially, it is severe gastritis that affects the esophagus. When the lower esophageal sphincter weakens or relaxes inappropriately, acidic stomach contents can flow back up, or “reflux,” into the esophagus, which does not have a protective barrier against the acid.
According to some estimates, 7 percent of Americans have heartburn daily and 14 percent have it at least once a week. GERD affects about 20 percent of American adults, mostly those in their 40s or older. Men are twice as likely as women to develop esophagitis and nearly 10 times as likely to get Barrett’s esophagus, a more serious condition.
