Herbal Medicine Chemistry

March 21st, 2024

For billions of years, plants have evolved in response to the needs and challenges of their environment. Through these constant biochemical challenges, humankind has also greatly benefited from all these chemicals contained in those plants. Herbal constituents are the active ingredients of plants. They are plant compounds (phytochemicals), which, when consumed, have healing effects in the human body.

In this course series, we will dive into the chemistry of how plants do their job in the world of herbal healing. For those with herbalist training, who want to dig deeper into this necessary topic, or for interested herb afficianados, we will bring herbal constituents into focus to improve the use of plants as medicine.

The Health Benefits to Acupressure

Start Date: March 25th, 2024

Acupressure, a form of massage therapy rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine, involves applying manual pressure to specific points on the body, akin to acupuncture but without needles. It targets various conditions such as motion sickness, headaches, and muscle pain by stimulating pressure points along the body’s energy pathways, promoting the flow of qi. Believed to release endorphins and influence the autonomic nervous system, acupressure aims to alleviate blocked energy along meridians, the invisible pathways through which qi flows. With at least 14 meridians connecting organs to other body parts, blockages are thought to lead to health issues. Learn more about acupressure techniques and how to address common concerns in our introductory class.
