Understanding Your Pain: What Every Person Needs to Know

Sept 21, 2026

45 Min

Pain is the most common reason people seek help of any kind, and it is also one of the most poorly explained. Most of us are handed a name for our pain, arthritis, sciatica, a bad back, and very little sense of what is actually happening or why it behaves the way it does. Why does it ease when you move but hurt when you first stand up? Why is it worse in cold weather, or at night, or after a difficult week?

Here is something remarkable. Long before modern medicine existed, three great healing traditions each worked out how to read those patterns. Ayurveda sorted pain by what makes it better and worse. Traditional Chinese Medicine distinguished pain from emptiness and pain from blockage. Western herbalism developed its own vocabulary again. Each tradition noticed something the others missed, and put together, they describe pain more completely than any one of them does alone.

This friendly session was created for everyday people who live with pain, or who care for someone who does, and who want to understand it rather than simply endure it. No medical or herbal background is needed. If you have ever wondered why your pain does what it does, or what the world’s healing traditions actually have to offer, this session is for you.

This session is ideal for anyone living with ongoing pain, anyone curious about herbs and natural approaches, and anyone who wants to understand the difference between pain that can be managed at home and pain that needs professional attention.

Understanding Your Pain: What Every Person Needs to Know

Sept 21, 2026

This welcoming, easy to follow session is designed for everyday people who want to understand their pain, make sense of the many approaches on offer, and feel more confident about their choices. It translates complex ideas into plain language, and it treats a subject that can be frustrating and isolating with warmth and respect.

We begin with the single most useful question anyone can ask about pain: what makes it better and what makes it worse. That one question, taken seriously, sorts most pain into recognizable patterns, and those patterns turn out to be the same ones the great healing traditions identified centuries ago. From there we look at why heat helps some pain and makes other pain worse, why the same remedy can work beautifully for one person and do nothing for another, and why pain that has lasted a long time behaves differently from pain that is new. We look at the everyday factors that quietly shape how much pain you feel, including sleep, stress, movement, and mood, none of which are imaginary and all of which are changeable.

This session uses the Global Herbalism approach. Rather than treating any one tradition as the whole answer, Global Herbalism draws on the best of the world’s great healing systems, the Western herbal and scientific tradition, Ayurveda, and Traditional Chinese Medicine, and places them alongside

conventional medical understanding. You will learn how each tradition reads pain, where they agree, what each one does particularly well, and how to think about the well-known herbs for pain. We will be clear throughout about what the evidence supports and what is traditional. Clear visual illustrations bring each idea to life in a way that is easy to remember.

This session is taught with deep respect for the questions everyday people bring to their healthcare. The instructor, K.P. Khalsa, brings over 5 decades of hands-on clinical experience in herbal and integrative medicine together with recognized expertise across Western herbalism, Ayurveda, and Traditional Chinese Medicine, the very traditions at the heart of the Global Herbalism approach. As a widely respected educator and author in the field, he is committed to honest, trustworthy health education that is rooted in both current medical evidence and real clinical experience, and that is careful to distinguish what is well established from what is traditional or still uncertain. The aim is simple: accurate, balanced information, delivered without hype or fear, that genuinely helps you make good decisions and know when to involve a qualified professional.

No medical background required. All are welcome.
