Your hands contain one of the most extraordinary concentrations of neural architecture in the human body. The cortical representation of the hands in the brain — the area of motor and sensory cortex devoted to hand function — is disproportionately vast relative to their physical size, reflecting the extraordinary complexity and sensitivity of hand-brain communication. Every gesture, every finger position, every quality of touch sends a continuous stream of neurological information to the brain that shapes perception, emotion, and physiological state in ways that modern neuroscience is only beginning to fully appreciate.
The ancient Indian science of Mudra understood this thousands of years before neuroscience existed. Mudra — from the Sanskrit meaning seal, gesture, or mark — is a complete system of therapeutic and transformative hand gestures, body positions, and energetic seals developed within the Tantric, Yogic, and Ayurvedic traditions as precise tools for directing prana, influencing the nervous system, balancing the five elements, and cultivating specific states of body, mind, and consciousness. Its applications range from immediate physiological effects accessible to anyone in their first session, to profound meditative and energetic practices developed over years of dedicated cultivation.
This course gives you immediate access to both dimensions — the practical and the profound — in a single accessible, richly grounded 90-minute introduction.
Your hands are instruments of healing. This course shows you how to play them.

Mudra

5 to 6:30PM, Pacific (8 to 9:30PM, Eastern)
Mudra is one of the most accessible and most underestimated therapeutic systems in the entire Yogic and Ayurvedic tradition. It requires no equipment, no special environment, no physical strength or flexibility, and no prior experience — only your hands, your attention, and a genuine willingness to engage with a system whose depth and clinical sophistication has been refined across thousands of years of unbroken practice and transmission.
The classical mudra tradition is documented across an extraordinary range of primary sources — the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, the Gheranda Samhita, the Tantric Agamas, the Nritya Shastra of Bharata Muni, the Ayurvedic texts on hasta chikitsa (hand therapy), and the extensive Hasta Mudra literature of the South Indian classical dance traditions that preserved and transmitted the most complete catalog of hand gestures and their effects in any written form. These sources describe mudras as precise energetic seals that redirect prana within the subtle body, balance the five elements within the physical body, influence
specific organ systems and psychological states, and in their most advanced applications prepare the practitioner for the deepest states of meditation and samadhi.
Modern research is beginning to provide physiological correlates for these classical claims — studies on hand gestures and neural activity, on finger pressure and autonomic nervous system response, on breath-gesture coordination and heart rate variability, and on the neurological basis of hand-brain communication are all contributing to a growing scientific framework that supports the clinical rationale of mudra practice.
This class is of interest to yoga students and meditators. Anyone is welcome to join.
In this 90-minute course you will receive a thorough, classically grounded, and immediately practical introduction to mudra — covering the philosophical and physiological foundations, the primary classical hasta mudras and their therapeutic applications, and clear practical guidance for building mudra into your daily life as a genuine health and wellness practice.
What You Will Learn
· The classical textual sources of mudra and what they teach
· The five element theory of mudra — how each finger corresponds to a specific element and how mudra practice balances elemental energies in the body
· The neuroscience of hand gestures — what modern research reveals about hand-brain communication and the physiological effects of specific finger positions
· Prana and mudra — how specific hand positions seal and redirect pranic flow within the nadi system and influence the five prana vayus
· The ten primary therapeutic hasta mudras
· Mudra for specific health concerns — practical protocols for anxiety, breathlessness, fatigue, poor digestion, joint pain, memory, and immune support
· How mudra integrates with Pranayama — the classical combinations of breath and gesture that amplify the effects of both practices simultaneously
· Mudra and the chakras — which hand gestures specifically activate, balance, and develop each of the seven primary energy centers
· Dhyana mudras — the classical meditation gestures used across Yogic, Buddhist, and Tantric traditions and their specific effects on meditative states
· How to build a daily mudra practice — timing, duration, posture, and sequencing guidance for integrating mudra into an existing wellness or meditation routine
