WHO IS THE PROFESSIONAL HERBALIST COURSE FOR? Expand- Anyone who wants to become a certified practicing herbalist.
- People who want to learn more about herbs so they can take care of their family or themselves.
- Other practicing health-care professionals would like to add knowledge of herbs and herbal preparations to their existing practice.
- The Professional Herbalist Course is divided into two years, made up of three modules per year. You can take the Year 1 course by itself, without committing to take the Year 2 course.
- You can begin both Year 1 and 2 at any point, since it is a modular system. As an example you could start with Module 2, the first year, taking modules in the order 2, 3, 1. So within that year, you can take the modules in any order.
- Before you start Year 2, you must have either completed Year 1 or have taken equivalent classes and/or study.
- Each class meets for 15 hours over a weekend, with a 1 hour daily lunch break. Three weekends, one a month, make up one module. The online course format consists of class once week for three months. Class includes lecture with some hands-on exercises done with support from instructor. Each instructor uses a variety of lecture, discussion, and group work.
- The focus of the first year is on gaining knowledge about the different herbs, their use and the traditions they come from.
- The second year focuses on evaluation and assessment techniques and clinical application.
Students will have obtained substantial academic knowledge toward applying for professional membership in the American Herbalists Guild, the only professional association representing herbalists in the United States. Each module is one term in length.
The Professional Herbalist course is designed to meet the needs of those working toward applying to the American Herbalists Guild for Registered Herbalist (R.H.) status. The topics and class hours are designed to be consistent with the educational guidelines of the AHG.
When completed with classroom hours and recorded homework hours, Modules 1, 2, & 3 (Herbal Healing, Herbs & Health, and Holistic Herbalism) will count for approximately half of the total academic course work, and the majority of the academic topics, required for the R.H. credential. (This will depend somewhat on the applicant’s background, previous education and experience.)
Students will then accumulate the remaining necessary course work by taking the Advanced Professional Herbalist courses (Modules 4, 5, & 6) and additional hours of therapeutic intensives, and anatomy. The R.H. credential requires clinical experience, so the certified student needs to practice, or to attend a clinical training program, for a period of time, before applying for the R.H. credential.
Applications for professional membership to the AHG are reviewed by an admissions committee of several AHG registered herbalists. Admission to the credential is by peer review. Since herbal training is diverse, the committee uses a set of criteria to evaluate applicants. The Registered Herbalist credential is granted upon successful application to the American Herbalists Guild. AHG publishes educational guidelines for working toward the credential. You can learn more about this application process here: http://www.americanherbalistsguild.com/becoming-ahg-professional-member.

The topics and class hours are designed to be consistent with the educational standards of the NANP. The Board Certified in Holistic Nutrition® credential requires clinical experience (internship), so the certified student needs to attend a clinical training program for a period of time before applying for the Board Certified in Holistic Nutrition® credential.
The Board Certified in Holistic Nutrition® credential is granted upon successful completion of the one-year program, application to the NANP for professional membership, and passing the Board Exam in Holistic Nutrition.

WHO IS THE ADVANCED PROFESSIONAL HERBAL AND NUTRITIONAL THERAPY SKILLS PROGRAM FOR? ExpandThe Advanced Professional Herbal Skills Program is intended for:
- Students of herbalism who want to become practicing herbalists, and who may be interested in applying for professional membership in the American Herbalists Guild.
- Students of the Nutritional Therapy Program who want to become practicing nutritional therapists, and who may be interested in applying for professional credentialing with the National Association of Nutrition Professionals.
- Students and Interns in other holistic health disciplines who are interested in practicing and honing their clinical skills while they prepare to start seeing clients.
Because this course focuses on clinical skills, and requires students to have enough herbal or nutritional knowledge to suggest a treatment protocol, we suggest that you complete at least one year of academic training or rigorous self-study before registering for this course.
WHAT IS THE ADVANCED PROGRAM LIKE? ExpandThe Advanced Professional Herbal and Nutritional Therapy Skills Program meets 1 weekend (all day Saturday and Sunday) per month spaced over six months, plus a recommended standard 3 hours independent study outside of class for each classroom hour.
Led by Khalsa and his highly trained core faculty of practicing Naturopathic Physicians and Herbalists, you will participate in the ongoing treatment of real clients with real cases. You will manage them over the course of their recovery, from their initial intake session through their follow up sessions. You will also learn about the ins-and-outs of running your own clinical practice; including charting, interviewing, orienting your client to treatment, and follow-up and fine tuning their regimen.
WHERE DO THE CLIENTS COME FROM? ExpandStudents in the Advanced Professional Herbal and Nutritional Therapy Skills Program will be expected to recruit clients from among their own community. In order to fill all of the time-slots for the class, each student should be prepared to bring in at least three clients over the course period.
The clients that you will be interviewing as a part of the course work will be your own clients. You will be in charge of managing their case, orienting them to the program, doing the formal intake and follow-up. Throughout this process you will be guided by your teacher and helped by your fellow classmates.
WILL I BECOME A CERTIFIED HERBALIST AFTER COMPLETING THE ADVANCED PROGRAM? ExpandThe goal of this course is to help you prepare for a successful application for professional membership into the American Herbalist Guild and/or the National Association of Nutrition Professionals (NANP).
- The Advanced Professional Herbal and Nutritional Therapy Skills Program is designed to provide clinical hours for you to apply toward the American Herbalist Guild clinical requirements for the AHG credential, Registered Herbalist (RH). - The Advanced Professional Herbal and Nutritional Therapy Skills Program is designed to provide internship hours for you to apply toward the NANP requirements for the NANP credential. (This course is oriented toward clinical skills, and does not supply basic academic study hours, which are also required for the NANP credential.)

This is expected to bring you to a total of 400 clinical hours. (To use independent study hours towards AHG or NANP certification, self-documentation is very strongly recommended.)
- Obtaining a professional credential from the AHG helps to recognize those that are competent in herbal medicine, and gives the general public greater confidence in you as a qualified herbalist. (Attaining the American Herbalists Guild professional credential requires a minimum of 2 years of academic study, in addition to 400 hours of clinical training and/or experience, at a level of consistent professional clientele.)
