Besides our regular webinars, the IIEI offers a series of courses covering herbalism from a global perspective to holistic nutrition. These courses include:
We are not able to offer scholarships or volunteer opportunities at this time.
Students will have obtained substantial academic knowledge toward applying for professional membership in the American Herbalists Guild, the only professional association representing herbalists in the United States. Each module is one term in length.
The Professional Herbalist course is designed to meet the needs of those working toward applying to the American Herbalists Guild for Registered Herbalist (R.H.) status. The topics and class hours are designed to be consistent with the educational guidelines of the AHG.
When completed with classroom hours and recorded homework hours, Modules 1, 2, & 3 (Herbal Healing, Herbs & Health, and Holistic Herbalism) will count for approximately half of the total academic course work, and the majority of the academic topics, required for the R.H. credential. (This will depend somewhat on the applicant’s background, previous education and experience.)
Students will then accumulate the remaining necessary course work by taking the Advanced Professional Herbalist courses (Modules 4, 5, & 6) and additional hours of therapeutic intensives, and anatomy. The R.H. credential requires clinical experience, so the certified student needs to practice, or to attend a clinical training program, for a period of time, before applying for the R.H. credential.
Applications for professional membership to the AHG are reviewed by an admissions committee of several AHG registered herbalists. Admission to the credential is by peer review. Since herbal training is diverse, the committee uses a set of criteria to evaluate applicants. The Registered Herbalist credential is granted upon successful application to the American Herbalists Guild. AHG publishes educational guidelines for working toward the credential. You can learn more about this application process here: http://www.americanherbalistsguild.com/becoming-ahg-professional-member.
K.P. Khalsa oversees and also teach in the courses. The Professional Herbalist Course is taught by practicing holistic health professionals from a variety of academic and clinical backgrounds. Each of these skilled instructors has been selected by K.P. for their experience and knowledge in the subjects that they teach. You can read more about these instructors here.
This series of classes is for health professionals and individuals with an avid interest in combining science (biochemistry and nutrition) and natural, drug-free medicine. Nutritional Therapy is also a great value added for health-industry small business owners, such as naturopathic physicians, chiropractors, acupuncturists and massage therapists.
If you would like to learn about a variety of nutritional topics – including the foundations of digestion, blood sugar, mineral and fatty acid balance, hydration, how weaknesses in these foundations lead to degenerative health problems, and how restoring balance improves overall health – these classes are for you!
The course series is taught over four terms and includes the following topics:
Fall module
Winter module
Spring module
Summer module
Students receive a Nutritional Therapist Award of Proficiency upon completion of all four course terms, and will have accumulated the academic knowledge required toward applying for board certification examination. Each academic term is three months in length. We recommend you learn more about the process of becoming Board Certified in Holistic Nutrition.
The Advanced Professional Herbal Skills Program is intended for:
Because this course focuses on clinical skills, and requires students to have enough herbal or nutritional knowledge to suggest a treatment protocol, we suggest that you complete at least one year of academic training or rigorous self-study before registering for this course.
The Advanced Professional Herbal and Nutritional Therapy Skills Program meets 1 weekend (all day Saturday and Sunday) per month spaced over six months, plus a recommended standard 3 hours independent study outside of class for each classroom hour.
Led by Khalsa and his highly trained core faculty of practicing Naturopathic Physicians and Herbalists, you will participate in the ongoing treatment of real clients with real cases. You will manage them over the course of their recovery, from their initial intake session through their follow up sessions. You will also learn about the ins-and-outs of running your own clinical practice; including charting, interviewing, orienting your client to treatment, and follow-up and fine tuning their regimen.
Students in the Advanced Professional Herbal and Nutritional Therapy Skills Program will be expected to recruit clients from among their own community. In order to fill all of the time-slots for the class, each student should be prepared to bring in at least three clients over the course period.
The clients that you will be interviewing as a part of the course work will be your own clients. You will be in charge of managing their case, orienting them to the program, doing the formal intake and follow-up. Throughout this process you will be guided by your teacher and helped by your fellow classmates.
The goal of this course is to help you prepare for a successful application for professional membership into the American Herbalist Guild and/or the National Association of Nutrition Professionals (NANP).
